Beaver Scouts help tackle dog mess in their local area

1^st Mynydd Isa Beaver Scouts have recently taken on the Community Impact Scout badge to help improve their local community green spaces and footpaths. The Beaver Scouts, who are aged from 6 to 8 years old found that there were lots of incidents of dog mess not being picked up and disposed of either at home or in the dog bins by their owners.  They discussed with the Beaver Scout Leaders that this can lead to people walking in the mess and spreading it across the village and sometimes into homes, also children could fall into it whilst playing in local green spaces which could lead to illnesses.

 

The Beavers, with the help of their Leaders came up with a plan to help their community to come together and support one another.  They created Dog poo bag dispensers to be put in areas within the village that dog walkers will be able to access if they run out of bags on their walks.

 

 

 

They also put a message on the bottle that reads:

‘Helping you Be Prepared!

Don’t worry if you forget your bag- just take one of these to clean up after your pet and next time you’re passing replace it with one of your own.

Please dispose of the full bag in the nearby dog fouling bins or take it home.

This will help to Keep our village clean and safe!

Once they had made the holders the Beavers and Leaders walked around the village putting them up in the rain which everyone enjoyed.  The Leaders have posted them on village Facebook pages to encourage the use of them and other villages are looking into creating some too.

Some of the feedback they have had so far has been wonderful. Mark Edwards, Streetscene coordinator for area 6 said

“Please pass on my thanks to all involved.  Hopefully their efforts on such an awful evening will be appreciated by dog walkers and the village”

Mared Eastwood, Vice-chair New Brighton ward said

“This is wonderful initiative by Mynydd Isa Beavers, it will hopefully encourage more people to pick up after their pets and I look forward to seeing these dispensers on the lampposts as I travel around the village.  I’ll keep some bags in my pocket so I can replenish them too!  Many thanks to all involved”
